     After two+ years of the virus, we are all suffering cabin fever. The Gold Coast Jazz Society is returning shows this year to our rescue. After a lengthy hiatus due to the scourge of Covid, they are kick-starting the year and celebrating their 30th anniversary! 

In celebration of Black History Month, History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present “60 Years of Black Art,” a fine art exhibit featuring works for show and sale from Dillard Center for the Arts’ Advanced Placement (AP) students, from February 1 – 28. The exhibit, curated by instructor Celestin Joseph, represents historical and contemporary themes of equality from the perspective of students at the very school that was instrumental in overturning segregation laws in the City of Fort Lauderdale 51 years ago. The exhibit will be open to the public at the New River Inn building of History Fort Lauderdale and will be accessible as a digital experience on History Fort Lauderdale’s YouTube channel.

Hampton University announced today that the New York Life Foundation, the charitable arm of New York Life, has contributed $1 million to the institution for the establishment of six separate funds, with the focus of helping diverse STEM-focused scholars succeed and grow in their academic careers. Award disbursals will begin in spring 2022 for the fall academic school year.

During a January 2, 2022, game against the New York Jets, Brown removed his shirt, shoulder pads, and gloves and tossed them into the stands at MetLife Stadium. Then, he ran through the end zone, raised his arms toward the crowd, and gave high-fives to stadium personnel as he exited.

      Florida A&M University (FAMU) has maintained its Carnegie R2 -High Research Activity – designation for the third consecutive year. FAMU attained the R2 designation in 2018 and is one of 10 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to hold the classification.

     Gomez will participate in the 2022 Leadership Institute for the Southeast Florida/Caribbean District, which covers coastal counties from Indian River through Monroe, and throughout the Caribbean Islands. She is one of 35 leaders chosen through a competitive application process. During the program, participants will attend in-person sessions covering a range of topics from Design and Construction to Development and Capital Markets, as well as complete a leadership project that addresses land use and policy issues.
