“Get the girl to check the numbers.” If she says the numbers are good, astronaut John Glenn told them, “I’m ready to go! This year (February 20, 2024) marks the 62nd Anniversary when America became the first nation to launch a human being to orbit the Earth, not only once, but three times! The “girl” John Glenn was referring to was Katherine Johnson, the brilliant African American mathematician, NASA Legend, and Woman of the 20th Century! John Glenn put his life in the hands of her mind instead of NASA’ electronic computers for those crucial calculations that would propel him into orbit and bring him home safely.

  The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum has announced an exciting lineup of new initiatives for Women’s History Month March 2024 that will further the museum’s mission to make women’s history more visible. These initiatives mark an important step as the museum enters the next phase of research and programming that will eventually inform the collection and a physical site in Washington, D.C.

The YMCA of South Florida announced the 2024 recipients of the Spirit of Community Award and Dave W. Cash Youth Leadership Award in Broward County during its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Inspirational Breakfast at First Baptist in Fort Lauderdale. Presented by JM Family Enterprises, the breakfast was one of several YMCA events held in celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, that also included a Teen Town Hall at Boyd H. Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes, an Inspirational Luncheon in Miami and a Day of Service in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

     A 45-year-old man was arrested in the theft of a bronze Jackie Robinson statue that was cut off at the ankles and found days later smoldering in a trash can in a city park in Kansas, police announced Tuesday.
