     The Dazzling Diamonds Cotillion celebrates young women’s transition to maturity and is a significant event that underscores Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s commitment to community service and educational excellence. This year, the event awarded over $35,000 in scholarships to deserving debutantes for their educational pursuits. The evening was filled with elegance and poise as each debutante was presented before an enthusiastic audience of family, friends, and community leaders. 

     The PEARLS Foundation Inc, in partnership  with the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Upsilon Xi Omega chapter is pleased to announce its presentation of Derby Day 2024 “Racing Toward Academic Excellence”, Celebrating the Kentucky Derby, May 4th at the GulfStream Racing and Casino Park located at 901 South Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach, Florida.

Angela Fulton has been named Regional Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools. Dr. Fulton brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Education Class 8 community in the Gold Coast region. Her leadership and dedication to education will undoubtedly enrich the community and benefit the students and educators she serves. In her new role, responsibilities include overseeing and managing a specific region within the district. Dr. Fulton will report directly to the Superintendent of Schools while playing a key role in implementing the district’s strategic plan, goals, and policies at the regional level.

       There’s nothing quite like seeing a kid who was born healthy but now suffers cognitive impairment and is prone to outbursts of anger. As a volunteer restoring six-story walk-ups in Harlem in the early 90s, I saw how lead paint chips and dust were wreaking havoc on the kids in those low-income buildings.

     Either nuclear weapons kill us or we move beyond them, soon. Via mass death or the building a new security system, the nuclear age is finished. The nuclear deterrence system that the world presently relies upon for its security is rotten, evil, completely unworkable, and obsolete. It is nuclear war waiting to happen, a war no one can or would win. But we remain ostriches with heads deep in sand, waiting passively for an inevitable holocaust apparently too big to prevent.

     In recent decades, however, nuclear-armed nations have scrapped nuclear arms control and disarmament treaties, begun the massive upgrading and expansion of their nuclear arsenals, and publicly threatened other nations with nuclear war. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which has assessed the nuclear situation since 1946, has turned the hands of its “Doomsday Clock” to 90 seconds to midnight, the most dangerous setting in its history.

     Set to house 700 students and expected to be completed by the fall of 2025, it marks a significant step in the development of the campus and the future of FAMU. The construction is on the corner of S Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, and W Osceola St. FAMU is advising caution in the area as students it is a heavy foot traffic area, and construction may cause limited visibility on the corner.

     For the past two months, we’ve shouted out our faves, our legends, and our rising stars who broke barriers and are blazing new paths, making history in the process. There are tons of Black women historical figures out there—some widely known and others not so much. Thankfully, there are historians and record-keepers out there keeping these women’s stories alive to share across generations.

Get ready Broward County to tee off with excitement as the Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) National Alumni Association (NAA), Broward County Chapter, proudly presents its Second Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament & Luncheon.  The event will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at the prestigious Jacaranda Country Club, 9200 W. Broward Blvd, Plantation, Florida. The action kicks off with registration at 7:00 a.m., followed by a thrilling shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. It’s a day filled with camaraderie, competition, and, of course, plenty of fun games sprinkled throughout the course, all culminating towards a mouthwatering luncheon.
