The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation’s (NCBCP) Black Women’s Roundtable (BWR) hosted its 12th Annual Women of Power National Summit from March 15th-19th, 2023. This year’s summit was a great success, bringing together over 600 Black women leaders and allies across generations, from over 20 states and the African Diaspora for five days to share and strategize on high-impact public policy priorities, develop organizing and empowerment plans to lift and improve the lives of Black women, girls and families and focus on the importance of self-care.

The USDA Forest Service recently hired three female fire leaders to mentor interns with the Student Conservation Association, which aims to train the next generation of conservation leaders. The all-female team, called a wildland fire crew, is partnering with the Student Conservation Association, Clemson University, and the Forest Service’s Southern Research Station through funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

     Democracy was never absolute.  It was a dream. A vision on the horizon that we continuously strived for. As I see politicians and people put their personal and individual needs and wants at the forefront of the greater good of democracy, I am sad to conclude that democracy is no longer understood to be our common dream for the U.S. and the world. 

Florida Supreme Court Justice Ricky Polston announced Monday he will step down March 31, giving Gov. Ron DeSantis another opportunity to place his imprint on the state’s highest court.

     As Pete carefully excavated sand, it was first discovered that Holness’ first name is Jeptha, not Jeff. Clearing up the name didn’t clear the mud from the path.  Ol’ Pete went digging in search of clues that might uncover some truths simply from researching the name, Jeptha.

But the winner hands down is Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields. The Founder of the Black Archives; the woman who saved the Historic Lyric Theater in Overtown from the wrecking ball; spearheaded the creation of the Historic Overtown Folklife Village, and established Miami-Dade County’s Black Heritage Trail is the South Florida woman I admire the most.
