Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) celebrated its founder’s 149th birthday on Wednesday with a focus on her life and her legacy.

Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was born on July 10, 1875, in Mayesville, South Carolina. Along with being B-CU’s founder, she was one of the nation’s renowned civil rights and women’s rights leaders.

At the July 10 event, held at B-CU’s Carl S. Swisher Library, attendees were able to explore a curated exhibit of artifacts from the Mary McLeod Bethune Home and University Archives.

B-CU says this event is the beginning of year-long festivities honoring Dr. Bethune as it prepares for a major celebration of her 150th birthday in 2025.
