As the County’s official pet adoption and animal welfare agency, Broward County Animal Care is committed to delivering high-quality pet adoption, animal code enforcement, and pet registration services. Legacy South Florida recently recognized Animal Care supervisors Modesto Mercedes, Jr., Shanika Prentice, and Mecca Seide among its 40 Under 40 Leaders for Today and Tomorrow. These three emerging leaders manage operations, admissions, and alternative placement for the agency that helps Broward County produce an inclusive and resilient community with a thriving quality of life.
“Modesto, Shanika, and Mecca lead with compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to public service. They are valuable leaders in an Animal Care team that delivers excellence to residents,” said Doug Brightwell, Broward County Animal Care Director. “Their recognition reflects the caliber of people serving Broward County every day. They help us advance our mission of protecting Broward County residents and animals by providing animal services and community education.”
Legacy’s annual recognition celebrates emerging leaders whose professional accomplishments, community engagement, and commitment to service are helping shape South Florida’s future. A selection committee of past winners and regional professionals vets nominees. Mercedes, Prentice, and Seide’s contributions helped Animal Care generate unprecedented results that include 3,894 pet adoptions, 568 pet reunions, and 733 animal transfers in the 2024 – 2025 fiscal year.
While their titles differ, these leaders share a common purpose: improving the lives of Broward County’s pets and the families who love them. Whether coordinating critical programs, leading frontline shelter operations, or expanding lifesaving placement opportunities for homeless pets, each has played an important role in transforming the organization’s service. Their leadership continues to strengthen one of South Florida’s most important public safety agencies while inspiring the next generation of leaders.
