     Jayland Walker was fatally shot by Akron, Ohio, police officers during a pursuit last week, according to Akron Police Chief Stephen Mylett, citing a medical examiner’s report. On Sunday, nearly a week after the fatal shooting, city officials also played police body camera footage of the incident for the first time.  On Monday, June 27, police said Walker, 25, fled as officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop for traffic and equipment violations. Walker got out of his car after a car chase, and a foot chase ensued. At least one officer orders him not to move and says, “Let me see your hands.”

The City of Oakland Park on June 30, 2022, presented former Broward County Administrator, Bertha Henry, with a Key to the City. The award was bestowed upon Mrs. Henry in recognition of her 24 years of service to Broward County and her partnership with the City of Oakland Park throughout her time as County Administrator, from 2008 to 2022. City of Oakland Park Mayor Michael E. Carn presented the Key to Mrs. Henry during a ceremony to mark the City’s 93 birthday.

      CDTC is accepting donations now through August 8 in preparation for its large-scale backpack distribution on Wednesday, August 10 and Thursday, August 11 at its headquarters located at 1401 S. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. During the busy two-day event, care coordinators and volunteers will assist each child with selecting his or her very own backpack and help fill it with a variety of school supplies.

With hurricane season upon us, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) partnered with United HomeCare and Florida Council on Aging to distribute hurricane meal kits to homebound seniors in Miami-Dade County.

HIV activist and “Busting Stigma” author Jesse Brooks will address the social issues of being African American, gay and HIV positive during “Black Men Speak: The Impact of HIV on the Black Community,” Island City Stage’s last Behind the Red Curtain public forum of its 10th anniversary season. This free forum precedes the South Florida premiere of Donja R. Love’s “One in Two,” debuting on August 4. This important panel discussion will also feature:

     Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward needs boat captains to volunteer their boats, time, and talent to host Little Brothers and Little Sisters and their Bigs at the mentoring organization’s 42nd Annual BIG Fish Tournament presented by the Moss Foundation. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on September 17th at Bahia Mar Marina, 801 Seabreeze Blvd., in Fort Lauderdale.

There are Board members in Broward who have 12 already but lucky for them, the clock doesn’t start ticking until after the November 2022 election cycle concludes. If re-elected three more times for a four year term, they could possibly serve 24 years on the school Board.

It is becoming increasingly clear that a conservative Supreme Court majority’s willingness to disregard established precedent has created a destabilizing dynamic that may extend far beyond abortion in a country already divided ideologically. Abortion services have abruptly and practically been discontinued in a few conservative states.
