     The sixth annual Glitz & Girlpower Awards held at the Hard Rock in Hollywood Florida on March 31st was created to support and empower women as well as provide a platform for women to embrace each other. It show-cased women from various segments of our South Florida community. The list ranged from entrepreneurs and entertainers to counsellors and even a congresswoman.

      Florida A&M University (FAMU) will host the Tenth Biennial National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI) Education and Science Forum, which is expected to bring together more than 400 participants from across the nation to discuss climate change, environmental justice, weather preparedness and other issues.

Today, longtime public servant, former Mayor of Broward County, and small business owner Dale Holness announced his campaign for Congress in Florida’s 20th District.  Holness begins the race with support from trusted prominent local leaders, including Broward County State Attorney Harold Pryor, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, and Broward County Clerk of Courts Brenda Forman, who will join the campaign for a kick-off event on Tuesday evening. 

The Supervisor of Elections’ Office will kick off the annual Spring High School Voter Registration Drive (HSVR) April 1st – April 30th 2022. The drive is presented in partnership with Broward County Public Schools to educate and get students registered to vote. All public high schools in Broward County will have the opportunity to register eligible students to become registered voters.

     U.S. service members and their families may be eligible for certain immigration benefits in recognition of their important sacrifices. Current service members may be eligible to become U.S. citizens through naturalization under special provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). These provisions reduce or eliminate certain general requirements for naturalization, including the requirements for the applicant to have resided in and been physically present in the United States for a specific period of time before naturalizing.

The City of North Miami Beach Economic Development Department will launch a Mortgage and Rental Assistance Program to assist homeowners that are experiencing difficulties paying their mortgage or rent. Applications will only be available on Monday, April 25, 2022, and must be picked up in-person at the NMB Economic Development Department from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 17050 NE 19th Avenue, North Miami Beach, FL 33162).

The Sweetheart Scam is a scheme that can be perpetrated online or in-person. The person perpetrating the scam convinces someone that they are in love, using the emotion to bilk money from the unsuspecting person—oftentimes an isolated older person. Here are some individual and collective actions we can all take to help protect our financial interests and security.[i]
