This year’s Lifetime Award recipient is Mr. Lamar Fisher, former Pompano Beach mayor, and a fourth-generation resident of Broward County whose grandfather also served as mayor of Pompano Beach in 1943. During his tenure as mayor, Mr. Fisher championed the completion of the beach area redevelopment and Old Town, solidifying Pompano as a sought-after destination for its current residents and visiting tourists alike. In 2018, Mr. Fisher was elected to represent Broward County as commissioner for District 4 including all or parts of Ft. Lauderdale, Lighthouse Point, Hillsboro Beach, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach and others. And this past November 2021, his colleagues selected him as Vice-Mayor for the year. In addition to his public service career, Mr. Fisher serves as President & CEO of Fisher Auction Company Inc., a thriving Real Estate Brokerage Firm located in Pompano Beach, Florida celebrating its 52nd year in business. He also lends his talent as a professional Auctioneer to multiple charitable organizations raising thousands of dollars each year. Prior to his heartfelt acceptance remarks, Mr. Fisher was introduced by retired Pompano  Fire Chief John Jurgle whose unprecedented minority hiring policies literally changed the department, transformational in terms of diversity and fairness.

A happenstance encounter years ago with a tossed-aside newspaper became both a learning experience and a metaphor for South Florida-based artist Rhona Rubio, whose massive interactive installation will provide both the focal point and the impetus for a free workshop on how to stop human trafficking from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 4 at ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale. 

Mayo is a small North Florida town that sits in the crook of the panhandle.    What I’m saying is, when DeSantis isn’t using his power to attempt the redistricting of his state’s congressional map for literally no other reason besides diluting Black voting power, he’s pretending systemic racism doesn’t exist and raining down fire and brimstone on all things involving race or gender in the classroom. He’s one of the most tenacious condemners of CRT despite him not having a clue what it is.

     If you’ve never been to one of Quick The Poet’s Mega-Flo’s, then you haven’t experience the true essence of Spoken Word in South Florida. For 10 years, Quick has been curating shows that leave audience members moved, captivated, and with the desire of wanting more. Each year, the show’s theme, mood, tone, and even acts vary. Ensuring each show is different from the last and keeping innovation and creativity at the forefront and core of each production’s mission. With so many amazing moving parts to this dynamic and unique event, it is without a doubt it had become a staple amongst the south Florida poetry scene and community.

       The racecourse at Markham Park is sanctioned by the USATF, and the race will be timed by AccuChipUSA, Inc. Participants are encouraged to dress in holiday and Christmas attire and bring their festively adorned pets. Awards will be given to runners in “Top 3” categories, age groups and for the wackiest holiday attire for both themselves and their pets. The all-ages event will also include a kids’ zone with art, crafts and a bounce house.
