     Florida A&M University uses the mantra that ends with the emphatic phrase Strike! Strike! And Strike again! That’s exactly what five FAMU graduates did in ensuring that the historically Black university was funded to the highest level through the Florida Legislature in history. The “FAMU Five” used an alignment strategy both in the Democratic party and allies outside of the party to ensure a take of over $60.3 million dollars above the school’s annual operating expenditures for infrastructure, capital projects, and student enhancement initiatives.

Island SPACE Caribbean Museum in partnership with Caribbean Professional Network will present a free Women’s History Month Celebration, taking place at the museum located at 8000 West Broward Blvd #1422 in Broward County Mall on March 20th at 2:30pm. Among other activities, the event will feature educational and cultural performances by local artists, including Positivity Pays, a community-based organization that works with children and families in the areas of basic literacy, media literacy and financial literacy.

Women’s History Month began as a single day in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia in March, and in October in Canada. March 8 is International Women’s Day, which has been honored in some form or another since 1911. Women’s History Week was first observed in the 1970s by local organizations and towns.

     The message she wants to leave with anyone who learns of her story is, “Focus on what you believe in and follow your dreams.  You don’t need a man to make you successful. Dream big, don’t look back. As long as you are independent you can be successful regardless of color.”

A call for proposals from “Grassroots Nonprofits” has been issued by Community Foundation of Broward.  Grassroots nonprofits operating in Broward County are eligible for grants of $5,000 to $25,000 as part of the Foundation’s new Small Grants Pilot Program.
