 Dillard Center for the Arts, in partnership with the Old Dillard Foundation, will celebrate the birthday of the late great Cannonball Adderly, former band director of Dillard High School with a concert on Saturday, September 21st at Dillard Center for the Arts Theater.

Hampton Art Lovers at the Historic Ward Rooming House and the South Florida Symphony Orchestra are leading an effort called âCulture Caresâ, South Florida Humanities at Work for Bahamas Hurricane Relief. On Wednesday, September 18th, from 6-8 p.m., we will gather with other Art Activists to raise monies for Operation Helping Hands, a collaborative effort of United Way of Miami-Dade and the Miami Herald. Operation Helping Hands supports the response, relief and recovery efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and surrounding areas impacted by this powerful storm.
    In 2013, Judge Catherine Blake of the U.S. District Court of Maryland, found the state in violation of the 14th Amendment rights of its HBCU students and alumni.
    Her ruling said Maryland continues to âoperate vestiges of a de jure system of segregation,â specifically by continuing a longstanding practice of duplicating academic programs offered at HBCUs, rather than investing in making the HBCU programs attractive to a diverse range of students.
The Ultimate Welfare Queen
    The weekend event showcased eight bands from historically Black colleges and universities from across the country. Participating bands included Miles College, North Carolina Central University, Prairie View A&M University, Southern University, Talladega College, Texas Southern University, Tennessee State University, and FAMU.
The City of Lauderhill Official Bahamas Relief Drop Off location has been an overwhelming success. A number of truck loads have been filled and delivered while supplies are still coming in.
    Three courageous and caring City of Hollywood residents banded together and worked to ensure that the remains of these individuals were finally treated with honor and decency. Their efforts were successful, and in1986 a monument was erected to restore dignity to those whose graves were disturbed. That same year, City officials renamed the grounds West Lawn Cemetery.
    The Brennan Center report follows a Center for American Progress analysis that examined how conservative lawmakers are suppressing the votes of people of color, young people, and those with disabilities.
