President Biden and Congress committed almost $700 billion in the next 10 years to reducing pollution, particularly in marginalized communities most likely to suffer, and to making the transportation and energy sectors cleaner to preserve the climate. We need to appreciate the investment to save our fragile planet made in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act as our Earth shot.
Bobby Henry, standing well over six feet tall as Publisher of the Westside Gazette, has answered the call to literally become the new Sheriff in the Broward County School District. In fact, he’s reminiscent of the character played by Joe Don Baker in the movie entitled , Walking Tall. This movie was based on a true story of Bufford Pusser, a tough Tennessee Sheriff who defended justice using a single plank of wood the size of a baseball bat.
A Change is Gonna Come
Since President Biden came into office, he has made it a priority to nominate federal judges who are not only legal stars but are diverse, come from underrepresented professional backgrounds, and have a deep commitment to civil rights. Many of them have been civil rights lawyers or public defenders. This is a real change, even from past Democratic presidents. For decades, presidents most often nominated corporate lawyers or prosecutors to the bench. Those people were also overwhelmingly white and male. Not anymore.
America throughout its history has embraced a sanctimonious white supremacists’ ideology. Religious tenets as well as laws codified function to empower them. Colonialism also became a means to control and dominate others deemed less human. The new white settlers who arrived on the shores of America in 1600, from England, brought with them their beliefs in slavery and ethnocentrism. In other words, the indigenous Natives already living on their land were called savages and Black people deemed subhuman.

Back in August, I wrote that getting “back-to-school” this year would also mean getting back to fighting far-right attacks on education. The threats included a rising number of efforts to ban books, and the Right’s efforts to take over local school boards.
Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan was a guest commentator on CNN’s coverage of the Georgia Senate Runoff between The Rev. Raphael Warnock and Republican challenger Herschel Walker. Duncan didn’t hold his tongue at all. He lambasted former U.S. President Donald Trump for personally picking Walker for the race. He pointed out that several of Trump’s handpicked candidates failed miserably in the mid-term elections. He would emphatically call for the Republican party to distance itself from Trump.
