Trump’s 2016 presidential election and gala was reminiscent of the launching of the Titanic, labeled the unsinkable ship. Regrettably, Captain Smith’s poor navigation led to the sinking of the Titanic. Trump tried during his first term at the helm to sink America’s democracy and replace it with his brand of autocracy. Having lost the 2020 presidential election, which was his second attempted voyage. Rather than this time sink the government, he ignited an insurrection and attempted to overthrow the government.
Dystopia defined is a society characterized by intense human depravation, great suffering, and injustice controlled by totalitarian and dictatorial systems. Entities like the Republican Party in the U.S. promote war, racism, sexism, and white supremacy promote an end to social security, environmental protection, continued burning of fossil fuels while they clearly exacerbate global warming, end to federally subsidized housing programs, and closing U.S. national boundaries to the poor and people of color immigrants whose environments and economies have been wrecked by U.S. foreign and military policy. Refuges from collapsed oppressive societies are turned away from U.S. borders. They flee failed economies, especially in Central America, that are controlled by gangs.
The multimedia publishing and communications industry is a trillion-dollar business sector in America. Yet the disparities and inequities of ownership of media industry businesses by persons of color remains glaringly inequitable.
We need not forgive racial in-justices in America’s past, and we must never forget them. But as a nation, we can reconcile.
As I write this, the final few races are being called in the midterm elections that were held weeks ago. It’s clear that that the House will be closely divided, with Republicans holding a very small majority. History shows that in midterm elections, the party that doesn’t hold the presidency typically gains a lot of seats in Congress – oftentimes in a wipeout of the party in power. Republicans’ gains were comparatively tiny this year – but they probably should have been even tinier.
On Tuesday, August 30, 2022, School Board Member, Torey Alston, took the oath of office to become part of the Broward County School Board.
Herschel Walker, bless his soul, took it upon himself to reveal to Republican voters and white supremacists that he’s the most unfit candidate chosen by Trump to run for office. To demonstrate his unfitness, as well as level of literacy, for office, he delivered a monologue at a rally about vampires and werewolves. This monologue made far less sense than Trump’s continued beliefs of a stolen 2020 presidential.
Blacks and Midterm Madness
A lot of good news came out of this month’s elections—and enough bad news to remind us that we can never let our guard down when freedom and democracy are at stake. This year, democracy itself was on the ballot, and voters made an important down payment on its future.
