This year, some of our endorsed candidates were running for office for the first time. Some were running for reelection. Some were stepping up to a position of greater responsibility. A majority were women and more than two-thirds were Black, Indigenous, or people of color. Eighty-five of them will be serving their communities in public office next year, and some of them will be helping to lead our nation in the years ahead.

The Biden-Harris Transition Team should not be forced to exclude talented people of color because they have chosen certain career paths. The vast majority of people of color, particularly Black people, do not come from generational wealth and most often are the first in their families to attend college. When they graduate and choose to go into public service, it is truly a personal sacrifice because they often do so with a heavy debt burden.

The health and economic catastrophe facing our country continues to cry out for urgent action. The American people cannot afford to wait until next year for action. The House of Representatives has made good on their offer to compromise. It is imperative that the Senate agrees to join the House in resolving the health and economic devastation that is facing Black people.
The arrival of Mariel Cuban refugees in 1980 on the shores of Florida, were extended greetings from long unseen family members as well as rejoicing Americans. Florida’s powerful politician worked tirelessly to ensure Cuban refugees were granted special immigrant status. Subsequently, the government assistance program was transformed from a mere handout of cheese and powdered milk to Cubans to an entitlement program named, Aid to Cuban Immigrants.
