BROWARD COUNTY, FL – There is an uptick in violent and hate crimes around Broward. In many of these instances, the youth are involved. But County Commissioner, Hazelle P. Rogers is taking a stance, in a different more positive way. She believes misguided youths can be mentored, which in turn reduces crime. This is the impetus for expanding the Mayor and Commissioners for a Day Initiative into the City of Lauderhill.
The program is aimed at engaging young residents in local government. This program provides a unique opportunity for the youth to experience the inner workings of government and gain firsthand knowledge about governance, decision-making processes, and civic responsibilities.
“We want to inspire and empower our future leaders by giving them a hands-on understanding of local government,” said Commissioner Rogers. “I first launched this program when I was first elected as a Council Member in Lauderdale Lakes, and now I am happy to expand it into Lauderhill, Sunrise, and Plantation to encourage active participation in community affairs, fostering a sense of civic pride and responsibility, and do my part to mentor the next generation and keep them out of trouble,” she added.
Students from Lauderhill 6-12 STEM-MED Magnet School will play the role of Mayor and Commissioners for a day on March 13, 2024, at 11:30 am, at Lauderhill City Hall (5581 W Oakland Park Blvd, Lauderhill, FL 33313). This initiative is presented by the Office of County
Commissioner Hazelle Rogers and supported by the Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill.
“The Kiwanis Club of Lauderhill is thrilled to partner with Commissioner Rogers on this initiative,” said Debbie Banner, past president of the Lauderhill Kiwanis Club. “We believe in investing in our youth and providing them with opportunities to grow as leaders and responsible citizens.”
Commissioner Rogers added, “We look forward to seeing the positive impact this program will have on our young residents and the future of our community.”
