Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson joins thousands commemorating the 50th Anniversary of ‘The March On Washington’

MIAMI FL — Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) and tens of thousands of people gathered at the National Mall on Aug. 24, 2013, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of “The March on Washington,” where Dr. Mar-tin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous and inspirational speech “I Have A Dream”.  Some 250,000 people attended the historic Aug. 28, 1963 march where civil rights leaders called for freedom, justice, equality and jobs.

            “I remember that historic day and being deeply moved by the sight of all those people, Black and white, and being captivated by Dr. King’s speech, which was a call to action and a call for change. While, no doubt, African-Americans and other minorities have made tremendous gains, there is still much work to be done when it comes to voting rights, equal access to education, affordable housing, and especially economic inclusion. We were fighting for jobs then and we are still fighting for jobs now.

    Hopefully this commemorative march will be a wakeup call to Congress to act in the best interest of the people to get our economy up and running and put people back to work,” said Congresswoman Wilson.

Congresswoman Wilson introduced the American Jobs Act of 2013 to stop teacher layoffs, restart desperately-needed improvements and maintenance to roads and bridges, retrain the jobless, and create incentives for businesses to hire the long-term unemployed. This legislation also simply and immediately stops sequestration.
