Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, up to 25 years for third-degree murder and up to 10 years for second-degree manslaughter.
The jury has found former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty on all the counts he was charged with over the death of George Floyd. One of the most closely watched cases in modern memory, causing a national awakening to police violence on Black people and systemic racism in this country.
Following closing arguments and a short deliberation of the jury, Chauvin is found guilty of unintentional second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
George Floyd was a 46-year-old Black man from Houston who had moved to Minnesota just three years before he was murder looking for a better life. He was a father and brother who adored his mother, loved making music and as a young man was noted as a star athlete.
Floyd lay face down, hands cuffed behind his back on Memorial Day 2020 and died after Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck while he pleaded, “I can’t breathe.” for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. This murder sparked protests in Minneapolis, across the United States and around the world. It triggered calls for police reform and introspections and contemplation on issues of racial injustice.
