By  Audrey Peterman

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — New book, Our True Nature: Finding a Zest for Life in the National Park System is an easy read for anyone interested in travel, American history, adventure, natural beauty, or America’s great out-doors. It follows the author’s journeys through 57 units of the National Park System, highlighting them as open, fun, hands-on, learning and discovery experiences for everyone from the young to the old, and as ideal low cost vacation destinations.

Audrey Peterman, author of Legacy on the Land, has written her second book high-lighting the hidden culture and history in our national parks that can stimulate a zest for life. A leading expert in this area, she and has visited more than 160 of the 397 park units. She has served as a consultant to the U.S. Department of the Interior and several terms on the boards of multiple national conservation organizations that focus on the parks. Our True Nature follows her journeys through selected parks, monuments, battlefields and memorials from Alaska to Florida, as well as the one-of-a-kind Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor.

“Audrey expresses the joy and wonder to be found in our national parks,” says John Poimiroo, CEO of the National Parks Promotion Council. “Her effervescent words bubble with the enthusiasm she has for the parks and all they bring to humanity.”

Our True Nature includes more than 50 dazzling photographs, spotlighting the glorious natural formations in the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona; the stabilized ruins of Fort Sumter National Monument in Charleston Harbor, S.C., where the first shots of the Civil War were fired, and places such as the Paul Revere House in Boston National Historical Park; the Liberty Bell in Independence National Historical Park, and John Brown’s Fort in Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Vir.

Peterman’s vivid descriptive writings make the reader feel as if they are right there with her as their personal interpretive guide. The stories and descriptions illustrate how the undisturbed beauty of nature brings feelings of awe, peace and harmony to the mind. She conveys the exhilaration of standing in the places where history took place, and finding the little-known contributions that Americans of every racial and ethnic group made in the development of our country. As a veteran environmentalist, she also highlights how and why everyone should protect the natural, cultural and historic treasures in our world class park system.
