Florida Memorial University President appointed to Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council
MIAMI GARDENS, FL – Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson recently announced the appointment of Florida Memorial University’s President Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis to the Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council (HSAAC). Dr. Artis is one of six new members to the Council that consists of university presidents and academic leaders who provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary on matters related to homeland security and the academic community.
“I am honored to have been chosen by Secretary Johnson to serve on the Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council,” said Dr. Artis. “The Council affords me the opportunity to contribute to the conversation around our nation’s security and the important role higher education institutions play in preparing students to fill jobs that keep our nation safe now and into the future.”
To strengthen engagement with the academic community, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) formed the HSAAC in March 2012. The Council is a federal advisory committee comprised of university presidents and academic leaders who provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary and senior leadership at DHS on matters related to homeland security and the academic community.
As a result of the Council’s more than 120 recommendations, key initiatives and accomplishments in support of the homeland security mission have focused on six areas:
- Academic Research and Faculty Exchange: Taps into the expertise of the nation’s colleges and universities to address pressing homeland security needs and incorporate scientific findings into DHS’s operations;
- Campus Resilience: Strengthens the ability of colleges and universities to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to and recover from the threats and hazards that pose the greatest risk;
- Cybersecurity: Strengthens partnerships to enhance DHS’s cybersecurity recruitment efforts and support resilient campus systems and networks;
- Homeland Security Academic Programs: Supports academic programs that help create an educated and in-formed workforce now and in the future;
- International Students: Advances opportunities for international students to study in America while maintaining the integrity of the immigration process; and
- Student and Recent Graduate Recruitment: Focuses on the unique career opportunities that DHS offers in a variety of fields to build the next generation of homeland security leaders.
Dr. Artis was appointed as the 13th President of Florida Memorial University in February 2014 and is the first woman president in the university’s history.
Prior to joining Florida Memorial University, she served in numerous roles at Mountain State University, including Director of Legal Studies, Senior Academic Officer for Distance Education, Vice President of University Advancement, Executive Vice President and Chief Academic Officer and the university’s Provost. Before embarking on a career in academia, Dr. Artis enjoyed an active general litigation practice for eight years. She served as a partner in Assessment by Design, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in the development and implementation of comprehensive assessment strategies for higher education institutions.
Additional new members appointed to the HSAAC include: Dr. Michael M. Crow, Dr. Beverly Wade Hogan, Dr. Jim Johnsen, Dr. Dawn Lindsay and RADM James Rendon.
