The independent political organization Florida Rising this week announced Victricia Simmons, former chief of staff, as its new executive director. Simmons carries more than a decade of experience with the organization as she enters her new role.

“I am honored to step into this role at such a critical moment in history for our communities and our movement,” said Simmons in a press release. “Florida belongs to all of us, and I am committed to building a future rooted in justice, opportunity, and the unstoppable power of our people.”

Florida Rising, one of the state’s largest independent political organizations with offices in 10 counties, aims to bring together Black and Latin communities to seize power and advance social, economic and racial justice. The organization served as a founding partner of the Yes on 4 campaign, a 2024 ballot initiative to repeal Florida’s six-week abortion ban.

Simmons, a Miami native, mother of two and two-time graduate of Florida A&M University, joined Florida Rising in 2013. Since then, she has served as human resources manager, campaign manager, acting executive director and chief of staff, where she oversaw development, finance and human resources.

“Victricia’s solid, capable, and determined leadership is exactly the steady helm we need in these turbulent times,” said Florida Rising Board Chair Maria Rodriguez. “For the past 12 years, Victricia has been integral to building the political power of Black, Latino, and all Floridians to have a voice in how our state governs. With our members, staff, and board united, Victricia will launch our movement’s new chapter.”

“Victricia is the leader we need for the future we are building together,” added Board President Alphonso Mayfield. “Her strategic vision, operational excellence, and deep connection to the community will carry Florida Rising to even greater heights.”

With Simmons at the helm, Florida Rising aims to continue leading campaigns on voting rights, affordable housing, reproductive freedom, environmental justice and economic equity.
