Fort Lauderdale officials are considering new regulations for electric bicycles and other personal electric transportation devices that could require riders to meet a minimum age, carry identification and register their vehicles with the city.

The proposed measures come as concerns grow over crashes involving electric bicycles and other micromobility devices. City commissioners are expected to decide on the rules before the end of 2026, with implementation anticipated in 2027 if the proposals are approved.

Under the proposed regulations, riders would need to be at least 16 years old to operate covered devices. They would also be required to carry government-issued photo identification and register their devices with the city.

Registered vehicles would have to display a city-issued registration decal at all times, allowing officials to identify devices subject to the new requirements.

The proposed rules would apply not only to electric bicycles, commonly known as e-bikes, but also to electric scooters, electric skateboards, hoverboards and Onewheels.

Proposed Restrictions on Riding in City Parks

The city is also considering limits on where electric devices could be used in public parks.

Under the proposal, riding would be prohibited in designated park areas, including recreational pathways and trails, athletic fields, turf areas, plazas and promenades.

The restrictions are intended to establish clearer boundaries for the use of these devices in shared public spaces, where riders may encounter pedestrians, athletes and other park visitors.

Violations could carry significant financial penalties. Riders would face a $250 fine for a first offense, with subsequent violations resulting in fines of $500.

The proposed penalties would give city officials a mechanism to enforce the new requirements if the commission approves the measures.

    Growing Concerns Over E-Bike Safety

Electric bicycles have become increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional bicycles and motor vehicles. Their electric motors provide assistance while pedaling, allowing riders to travel with less physical effort.

Depending on the model, e-bikes can reach maximum assisted speeds of 20 mph or 28 mph. Their speed, combined with growing use on streets, sidewalks and shared recreational paths, has contributed to concerns about rider and pedestrian safety.

The proposed regulations reflect Fort Lauderdale’s effort to establish additional safeguards as electric transportation devices become more common.

By introducing a minimum age, identification requirements and mandatory registration, city officials would create a more structured system for regulating who can operate these devices and how they are used.

The proposed park restrictions would also establish areas where riding is not permitted, while the fines would provide consequences for violations.

    Final Decision Expected Before 2027

Fort Lauderdale commissioners are expected to finalize the proposed regulations by the end of 2026. If adopted, the rules would introduce new responsibilities for riders and establish additional restrictions on electric transportation devices throughout the city.

Until commissioners approve the measures, the proposed age limit, registration requirements, park restrictions and fines remain subject to the city’s decision-making process.

If the proposal moves forward as anticipated, riders will need to prepare for a new set of local requirements when operating e-bikes, electric scooters and other covered devices in Fort Lauderdale in 2027.
