October 1 event will feature live music, games, food trucks, vendors’ marketplace, kids’ zone and more

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Friends and family of the late Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Carlton B. Moore will honor his memory with a special event from 3 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1, in Osswald Park, 2220 NW 21 Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The Third Annual Carlton B. Moore Friends & Family Day will feature Miami Brown, a popular funk and R&B band, a bid whist tournament, a three-point basketball contest, food trucks, a kids’ zone, a vendors’ marketplace, a line dancing performance and more.

“Families are the heart of our community, and this event celebrates families,” said Rebecca Jones, president of the Carlton B. Moore Freedom Foundation (CBMFF). “We have activities and entertainment for every age, and we look forward to bringing everyone together for an important cause.”

First held in 2019, the event is presented by the City of Fort Lauderdale and the Carlton B. Moore Freedom Foundation (CBMFF) in memory of Moore and his commitment to community service. Moore served on the Fort Lauderdale City Commission for more than 20 years and was a past president of the Fort Lauderdale branch of the NAACP. He died at age 60 on April 2, 2014, from complications of a stroke he suffered on Christmas Day, 2013.

The event also will include the inaugural presentation of the Carlton B. Moore Community Service Award, presented posthumously to Beauregard Cummings, who died at age 96 on June 28, 2021. Cummings, who was dedicated to improving the lives of others through education, job training, and economic empowerment, was instrumental in establishing Fort Lauderdale’s first Opportunities Industrialization Center.  He also spent many years as the Director of the L A Lee YMCA.

“We established this new award to recognize an individual who embodies the values and spirit of commitment to social justice and community service that defined Carlton Moore,” Jones said. “We could think of no better person than Mr. Cummings to receive the inaugural award because, like Commissioner Moore, he was a visionary leader who dedicated his life to uplifting his community.”

Moore’s love of community and his devotion to service was inspired in part by his mother, the late Ada B. Moore, who for decades was a teacher, supervisor, and “second mother” to children at Sunland Park, now known as Carter Park. Ada Moore passed away shortly after the initial Friends & Family Day event, which she was proud to help organize in memory of her son.

“We were so happy that my grandmother was part of our first Friends & Family Day celebration,” said CBMFF Vice President Forrest Moore, Carlton Moore’s youngest of two sons. “She poured her heart into our community and was overjoyed to help us establish a new tradition that would continue her legacy of service and pay tribute to my dad and his commitment to public service and social justice.”

Established eight years ago, the CBMFF is dedicated to helping inmates who may have been treated unfairly because of mandatory minimum sentencing and to providing college scholarships to Broward County students. To date, the Foundation has presented $33,000 in scholarships to deserving high school graduates.

“Education is the pathway to success in our country and our community,” Jones said.  “We are very proud of all of our scholarship recipients. Their success is a tribute to Commissioner Moore and helps to perpetuate his memory and his contribution to Fort Lauderdale and all of Broward County.”

Jones also thanked event sponsors. We are grateful to the City of Fort Lauderdale and all our generous sponsors,” she said. “We truly appreciate their support in helping us bring this project to fruition.”

Sponsorship opportunities are available until Sept. 23. For more information, please contact the Foundation at 954.328.7848 or cbmffoundation@gmail.com.
