Men’s professional golf must right the past racist wrong of not officially recognizing the grand slam achievement of Tiger Woods. From 2000 to 2001, Tiger simultaneously held all four professional majors, yet the achievement was not recognized as a grand slam.
Why is winning all four of golf’s majors – the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and the PGA Championship – recognized as the career grand slam, and yet Tiger simultaneously holding all four majors is not a grand slam? When white Bobby Jones held all four golf majors, it was recognized as a grand slam. Why was the same recognition withheld from Black Tiger Woods?
Golf officials were not guided by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of not judging by the color of one’s skin, but by the content of one’s character. Golf’s failure to properly recognize Tiger’s achievement was based on skin color, not the character which led to winning and holding all four major championships.
Golf must right the wrong.
