Cyproheptadine Is Legal But May Deadly. Cops Issue Warning In South Florida.

The drug, Cyproheptadine, potentially led to the death of an infant in Broward County. BSO shared this advisory with BocaNewsNow.com:
The Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit is echoing a warning issued earlier this year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over the illegal use of the drug cyproheptadine.
According to the FDA, cyproheptadine is a powerful antihistamine that also acts as an appetite stimulant and is frequently used to augment one’s physical appearance. It is only legal with a doctor’s prescription but can be found in products sold in certain stores and online without a prescription. Antihistamine overdose can cause disorientation, hallucinations, coma and, in some cases, death.
Currently, BSO’s homicide detectives are investigating the death of a baby in August 2022, in Oakland Park, which the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled a homicide caused by an overdose of cyproheptadine. The ME’s ruling was finalized in August. The investigation into the child’s death is active and ongoing and no further details are being released at this time.
According to the FDA, cyproheptadine can be found in products such as Apetamin, which is not approved by the FDA, is manufactured overseas, and imported illegally into the U.S. BSO is releasing this warning to educate and inform the public about the potential deadly effects of the misuse of this drug and to encourage legal use of cyproheptadine with a physician’s prescription. Also, always check the list of ingredients prior to taking any medication or supplement or before giving it to a child or loved one.
