Education plays a vital role in the development of every child, irrespective of their background. However, Black communities have historically faced social challenges when it comes to accessing quality education. Despite these challenges, we have found success.
In the years after the announcement of the ending of slavery, we have relied on the Black church and benevolent societies to address our educational needs and the motivation of parents and especially grandparents to push us to success. For generations since, we have fought for access to quality education and equivalent resources of neighboring communities. Today, we have greater access to education, books, information, and tutorials despite still facing the challenges of limited resources. We still need to catch up. What can we do?
Enrolling our children in early childhood education centers will provide a strong foundation for their future development. Children will benefit from learning the basic concepts and skills to develop their cognitive abilities, build self-confidence, and social and emotional development. In Florida, all children residents who are over four can attend a Free Voluntary Prekindergarten Program available at most childcare centers. For families with challenges enrolling children into an early childhood education center, here are a few tips to do at home. 1. Create a space in your home for learning. 2. Set aside time for reading. 3. Communicate with your child. 4. Play with your child and create memories and experiences that help children to grow emotionally and cognitively. 5. Be a positive role model. 6. Become familiar with your local libraries. Our community libraries have sections and services dedicated to children that are available at no cost.
We must revitalize the push and put emphasis on education in our community. We have access to free pre-kindergarten programs and educational tools to prepare our children for great success. Enroll your child into an early childhood education center, create an environment for learning at home, and visit your local library.
