The Dillard Panthers 100 Club, under the leadership of President Bruce McGraw, is sponsoring a fan  bus to Jacksonville for all supporters interested in attending the football game between the  Edward Waters Tigers and the Albany State Golden Rams to support essentially two outstanding Panther alums, Toriano Morgan and Quinn Gray, head football coaches respectively of those two outstanding universities. See flyer on page 4 for details.

You recall the Marlins’ sudden exit from baseball’s wildcard 3 game elimination series. Pitted against the Philadelphia Phillies, they were soundly defeated in 2 games. However, we salute their successful season highlighted by making the playoffs as a wildcard team, one of the top 12 in MLB. Well, baseball can be a humbling game also. Often the teams with the best records in the regular season lose momentum in the playoffs, even with home field advantage. The Atlanta Braves, arguably the best team in baseball, lost their first NLDS game at home to the Phillies, a  solid baseball team which has caught fire at the right time. Atlanta did, however, even the 5 game series by winning the second game….  The team with the second best record, the L. A. Dodgers, have blown home field advantage, losing 2 consecutive games to the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the ALDS playoffs, the Baltimore Orioles, even with home field advantage and the best league record, are on the brink of elimination courtesy of the Texas Rangers who have a commanding 2 game lead and are headed back to Arlington. Although the series between the Astros is tied 1-1, the Twins won the first game in Houston so you really have to be on your “A” game this time of the year. Great pitching and timely hitting are keys to success and winning the  World Series.

Congrats to Plantation High football coach Steve Davis, recently honored him with a Red Coat, symbolic of his myriad contributions to Plantation High and Broward athletics and education generally.

Finally, Simone Biles and her teammates have reshaped the world of gymnastics landscape. At the World Games, she placed first overall, finishing second in one event, the floor exercise. The silver and bronze winners were Puerto Rican and Black American, making history as minorities finished in the top 3 places.
