By Johnny McCray,  Jr., Esq. Men’s Day Chairperson

Pastor Eddy Moise, Jr. and the members of Bethel AME Church — Pompano, are excited to welcome as guest preacher for our 2014 Men’s Day celebration, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., Pastor Emeritus of the Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC), a mega church in Chicago, Ill., with around 10,000 members. The service is Feb. 23, 2014, 11 a.m. In 2008, Wright retired after 36 years as the pastor of TUCC. He was pastor and mentor for President Barack Obama for 20 years.

Wright is a man of faith, a noted theologian, world renowned scholar, homiletic genius and a pastor’s pastor. According to his bio, he now spends time “preaching, teaching and leading study tours to Africa, Brazil and the Caribbean.”

Historically, Men’s Day has been the preeminent time in the Black church to recognize the exemplary men who have decided to set themselves apart as men of God.

This special day provides a forum to openly appreciate and celebrate the contributions Christian men make to their families, churches and communities. However, in as much as this day is a time of reflection, it is also a time for men to look forward, to make searching inquiries of themselves, and to assess their collective place in contemporary society. It is also the opportune time to deepen their resolve to serve God, the family and community, under the banner of this year’s Men’s Day theme: “Restoring the Christian Man to His Rightful Place.”  As part of the Men’s Day experience, Bethel will host for the third consecutive year “Real Talk.” The topic this year is “Ending Domestic Violence in Our Community.” This public forum will be led by a distinguished panel of experts, civic leaders and social service professionals, who engage our youth and adults in thoughtful dialogue about the adverse effects and consequences of domestic violence and make available resources to combat this scourge, will in our community.

Special guest will include Bethune-Cookman University Coach-of-the-Year Brian Jenkins and the 2014 Black College and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football Champions. We are also excited to have the Everglades Legacy Choir in attendance as they come to make a joyful noise unto God.

Please join at Bethel AME Church—Pompano in celebration of our Annual Men’s Day. The church is located at 405 N.W. Third Ave. (Esther Rolle Avenue), Pompano Beach, Fla. Call (945) 943-6220 or Facebook: Greater Bethel Pompano.
