    By Jessica Modkins

MIAMI, FL (July 19, 2017) SBC Community Development Corporation invites the community to their FREE Summer culminating musical production, The Wiz Live! and art gallery “There’s No Place Like Home” at Second Baptist Church. On August 4, 2017 the musical, The Wiz Live! will unveil at 6 pm and from August 2, 2017 through August 4, 2017 the art popup exhibition will open daily at 9 am.

The Wiz Live! is a creative retelling of the 1975 Broadway musical The Wiz. The new musical that was aired in 2015 on NBC is dedicated to celebrating Black brilliance, culture, and natural beauty in a positive way. The production will high-light Dorothy with natural hair, a lion with dreadlocks, and a good witch with braids. The plot focuses on unleashing the magic within your heart, and key characteristics for children to embody like remembering where you came from, community support, teamwork, courage, love, wisdom, faith, and determination regardless of the obstacles.

The pop-up exhibition, “There’s No Place Like Home” is curated by Bart Mervil and the Miami Urban Contemporary Experience (M.U.C.E.). It will feature visual art from Erica Appleby, Nate Dee, Bermy Dorvil, Tavares Hill, Anthony Lumpkin, Robert McKnight, Joe Wesley, Art by Nuno, Lavish -n- Looney, and other Black professional artists from the local and greater areas. The gallery also features the work of community students from Kindergarten to 12th grade attending and/or interning at the 5 collaborating summer programs: SBC CDC Youth Zone S.T.R.E.A.M.S Summer Program, Richmond Park: Fit to Lead, Youth Impact, A Place of Refuge Academy, and Children’s Learning Center of Richmond Heights.

This production would not be able to take place without the generous support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Com-missioners.
