After a successful run at Colorado, quarterback Shedeur Sanders is preparing for the NFL draft and will likely become a first round pick.

While his name might be announced with CU, Sanders recently acknowledged his start at Jackson State University and how the HBCU experience shaped him as a football player.

“HBCUs are definitely a part of my foundation,” Sanders said at the East-West Shrine Bowl media event this past weekend. “I’m excited to be a part of that class and in that community.”

Sanders, son of former Jackson State and current Colorado coach Deion Sanders, won SWAC rookie of the years honors in 2021 and conference player of the year in 2022, leading the Tigers to back-to-back SWAC titles and Celebration Bowl appearances.

Sanders joined his father at Colorado and won the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year award this past season. He also says that his foundation and college career makes him a worthy selection for any NFL team this coming spring.

“Going there and experiencing that, then moving to a Power 5; we changed the program at Jackson and we changed it at Colorado,” he said. “That’s why I’m the most guaranteed risk you can take.”
