A brother and sister are running against each other for a Florida Senate seat, and their mother has already chosen a side.

On Tuesday (June 24), siblings Randolph Bracy and LaVon Bracy Davis both appeared on the ballot for Florida’s Senate District 15 special election, per PEOPLE.

The brother and sister are going head-to-head in the election following state Sen. Geraldine Thompson’s death earlier this year.

Randolph and LaVon are both Democrats but have focused on different issues during their campaigns. LaVon said she wants to continue Thompson’s decades-long efforts to bolster voting rights, establish jobs, and increase pay for public school teachers. Randolph, who challenged Thompson for her Senate seat last year, is running on a platform focused on better the workplace, housing, transportation, and mental health services.

During the 2024 Florida Senate race, LaVon, who has served as a state representative, backed Thompson over her brother, as did their mother, LaVon Wright Bracy, a local activist. The mother was reportedly a close friend of Thompson’s and served as her maid of honor.

LaVon Wright Bracy has again aligned with her daughter, serving as her campaign manager in the race against Randolph.

Randolph, who announced his campaign first, called his sister’s decision to run for the same seat “disappointing and hurtful.”

When asked about her opponents in the race, LaVon Bracy Davis said she wasn’t running “against any of them — I’m running for the people of Senate District 15.”

LaVon was projected to win the primary for Florida’s Senate seat as of Wednesday (June 25), defeating her brother and fellow Democrats Coretta Anthony-Smith and Alan Grayson.
