The Orange Blossom Classic Committee officially launched the countdown to the 2025 Invesco QQQ Orange Blossom Classic with a high-energy press conference held in Miami, Florida. The event brought together city leaders, corporate sponsors, university representatives, and media for a first look at this year’s highly anticipated matchup and official schedule of events.

       School Board Partners’ (SBP) latest paper, Fulfilling Promises: What America’s School Boards Actually Need to Succeed identifies three core challenges that hinder the effectiveness of school boards nationwide: a lack of representation, a lack of role clarity, and a lack of training and resources. To address these obstacles, we need to ensure school boards are more representative of the students they serve, provide clear guidance on the responsibilities of board members, and dignify the role of board members through professional development and effective governance resources.

       The number of childcare centers has returned to pre-pandemic numbers, but the number of FCC homes has decreased since 2022. The national average price of childcare in 2023 was $11,582. This is equivalent to 10% of a married couple with children’s median household income and 32% of a single parent with children’s median household income, despite the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services setting 7% of annual income as the benchmark for affordable child care. The average American family is forced to spend a significant portion of their income on child care, or forgo income and stop working to provide child care.

         The 2023 Pepsi “National Battle of the Bands” (NBOTB) lived up to the hype once again, as eight of the nation’s top Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) marching bands captivated the crowd of more than 40,000 attendees at Houston’s NRG Stadium on Saturday, August 26th, with their electrifying performances.

     As schools look at student learning post-pandemic and communities react to standardized test scores, NEA members are leading the conversation about how to boost student learning. Teams of education stakeholders—including educators, district leaders, and a parent or community representative—gathered for three days, in Los Angeles, last winter to explore best practices to accelerate student learning and offset learning delays.  

       Last Tuesday, The School Board of Broward County, Florida voted to appoint Dr. Valerie S. Wanza as Task Assigned Superintendent of Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). Dr. Wanza will remain in the role while the School Board negotiates a contract with Dr. Earlean C. Smiley who was selected as Interim Superintendent. The unanimous vote, which took place during a Special School Board meeting on Tuesday, February 7, followed the School Board’s acceptance of Dr. Vickie L. Cartwright’s mutually agreed resignation as Superintendent.
