There is a VERY deep lesson in Travis Hunter’s three year climb from being the top high school football player in America (according to Rivals, ESPN, 24/7 Sports and other media outlets that provide such rankings), to winning the Heisman Trophy—an award given annually to the top player in the collegiate game. Simply stated, that lesson is that we all must have unwavering faith in the vision that has been placed in our hearts for our own lives—be it professional, personal, or a combination of the two!

Guns are by far the most common weapon used to kill Black homicide victims in America according to Black Homicide Victimization in the United States: An Analysis of 2022 Homicide Data, a new study from the Violence Policy Center (VPC). The study shows that in 2022 there were 13,466 Black homicide victims in the United States and that 87.4 percent of these victims were killed with guns. Black Americans represented 13.6 percent of the U.S. population that year yet accounted for 54.1 percent of all homicide victims.
Not too long ago, the Westside Gazette reported on the journey of one Gwen “Gi Gi” Thomas, a Miami Northwestern senior who excelled as a student-athlete academically and athletically, maintaining an overall 4.3 g.p.a. while competing on the most challenging stage as a gymnast. With the unwavering support of family and friends, Gi Gi , as previously noted, performed with great aplomb at the state of Florida gymnastics meet! This was an amazing feat, particularly in light of returning from a devastating knee injury ( ACL/Meniscus ) that threatened her gymnastics career.

Everyone has heard the advice to “listen to your heart.” This holds true especially when it comes to heart conditions like hereditary transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (or hATTR-CM). It took years for me to get diagnosed. My body was telling me something was off – but at the time, I didn’t listen to it. Also, some doctors are not familiar with the disease. I saw six doctors before I was finally diagnosed with hATTR-CM – and my experience is not unusual. That’s why I’m so passionate about sharing my story.
