PEMBROKE PINES, FL – In keeping with the Children’s Harbor mission of providing independent life skills and job assistance for foster care youth that age out of the system, the Marine Industries Association of South Florida hosted a special career event for 20 transitioning foster care youth ages 18 to 21.
The success rate of teens who age out of the foster care system is staggering. Only 30% of foster youth who graduate with a high school diploma will enroll in post-secondary education and only one in two foster care children who age out of the system will have some form of gainful employment by the age of 21.
At the special career event, representatives from Bluewater Marine, Resolve Marine and Goltens Miami introduced marine career opportunities to the young adults. Additionally, students participated in a hands-on fire extinguisher demonstration learning the ins and outs of using a fire extinguisher.
