Downbeats at Sunset Back at Destination Sistrunk Cultural Center

    By Lt. Ken Roland

     Fort Lauderdale, FL – June 6, 2025

The rhythmic heartbeat of the 954 returns! The Ken Roland Project – Downbeats at Sunset makes its vibrant return to the Destination Sistrunk Cultural Center, bringing together music, art, culture, and community in a night destined to be unforgettable.

This month’s event will be a celebration of sound and spirit, uniting African percussion and old school soulful tunes under the golden glow of the setting sun. But more than just entertainment, this evening honors those who have uplifted the soul of our community—our local heroes.

A Night of Color, Rhythm & Recognition

Guests can relax and unwind while exploring Dr. Lisa’s Coloring Book Cafe, a creative wellness lounge where art meets mindfulness. It’s an interactive space where adults can color, connect, and reflect in a peaceful and positive environment curated by Dr. Miriam Lisa Baxter, Ph.D., a lifelong mental health advocate.

Honoring the 2025 Talented Ten – Unsung 954 Heroes

A major highlight of the evening is the much-anticipated presentation of the Talented Ten Unsung Heroes Awardsheartfelt acknowledgment of individuals who represent the voice, conscience, and heartbeat of Broward County. These honorees have shaped our stories, lifted our communities, and carried the 954 forward with honor and integrity.

    This year’s Talented Ten includes:

    4. Alex “Big Lip” Chisholm – Local radio legend who entertained and educated the airwaves
    5. Tyrell Dozier – Educator, author, and fearless Black excellence advocate
    6. Commissioner Dr. Pamela Beasley Pittman – City of Fort Lauderdale district 3 Commissioner and community caretaker
    7. Alice Dudley – Tireless advocate for youth and community safety
    8. Billy Tukes – Musical mentor and cultural archivist
    9. Sylvester “Chico the Virgo” Westley – The voice that wakes up the 954
    10. Black Sheep Bikers – Motorcycle club with a heart of service and civic action

    Special Moment in History Award

We are proud to honor Robert Payne, a pioneering figure in South Florida’s aquatic history and a groundbreaking lifeguard whose courage and strength opened doors for future generations. His legacy is a beacon in the ongoing story of resilience and representation.

    Music Lives On

As the stars rise, groove to a special live performance by recording artist William “Kooly” Scott, whose soulful vocals and stage presence are sure to captivate. With the smooth backdrop of African rhythms and classic soul, this night promises to move both your feet and your heart.

    Savor the Flavor

No celebration is complete without delicious food, and we’re bringing the heat with Steve Henry’s legendary BBQ—a local favorite sure to satisfy.
