Well done, good and faithful Servants

Congratulations to Ava Holloway-Robertson and Avis Hollway for being selected as members of the West Virginia State University Sports Hall of Fame. The event will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021, at the Homecoming festivities. The official induction ceremony will be held at the National “W” Club Breakfast in the Banquet Room at the Wilson Student Union Building at 8:30 a.m. They will also be introduced during halftime.

Ava LaVett Holloway-Robertson and Avis LaVerne Holloway were born  identical twins on July 10, 1957 in Fort Lauderdale to Gus and Selma A. Hinton-Holloway. Both graduated from South Plantation High School in 1975 and went on to receive athletic scholarships to West Virginia State College (now University). There they thrived in basketball, tennis and track and field. They also took up several interests outside of sports including Drama Club and the Yellow Jacket Newspaper. Ava even won Ms. Ebony Essence in 1978, while Avis pledged the Nu Chapter off Alpha Kapp Alpha Sorority in 1979.

Ava currently resides in Port Lucie, Fla. and has worked as a schoolteacher for the past 24 years. She is widowed with two sons: Carlton Beau, 30 and Tre Holloway Robertson, 2, as well as five stepchildren. For more than 20 years, Ava has also dedicated her free time to teaching both children and adults the art of dance within her community.

Avis, who now resides in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. is a retired United States Postal Worker (25 years). She is the proud mother of Ashley LaVette Hanna-Holloway, 36, and spends her free time volunteering with the School Board of Broward County, dancing with Ava’s Liturgical Dance Club, and working part-time with the Christian Life Center/Precious Promise Academy.

The two women would like to personally thank all the teachers, coaches, counselors, friends and family that have contributed to their success in both college and life. They’d especially like to dedicate this honor to their recently deceased mother Zelma for her never ending encouragement
