Month: May 2020

When it is necessary I will share my space in this box to give important information to our readers. This important information is concerning our brothers and sisters who are incarcerated. We know that with this COVID-19 virus being incarcerated is one of the main places where this virus can wreak havoc.

Earlier this week, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the easing of stay at home orders and a partial re-opening of Florida starting on Monday, except in Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade counties. Despite phase one of the Governor’s plan to re-open, I have heard from far too many of our neighbors that Florida’s unemployment system continues to fail them, at a time when help is needed the most. As unemployment claims across our country exceeded the 30 million mark this week, Florida took the lead with more unemployment claims filed each week than any other state. Last week alone, 432,465 jobless claims were filed in Florida.

Coronavirus is impacting African Americans at disproportionate rates – African Americans are being disproportionately impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and Covid-19 infection.

Last week, the release of a second loan program to bolster businesses and revive the economy provides about $484 billion for small businesses, hospitals, and additional testing. But Black business owners said funds need to be earmarked specifically for African American firms to ensure that their companies survive the pandemic.

This week our Florida governor decided to reopen parks for walking and running, and even golf courses. However, playgrounds, basketball, and tennis courts are closed until further notice.
