Mel Holmes was a 1967 graduate of Mays High School. He played three years at Mays High School as an outstanding football tackle. He was a member of the 1966 State Championship Football team, the first and only squad in school history to win a coveted state championship. After high school graduation, he received a 4 year football scholarship to North Carolina A&T State University where he was a two-year letterman and two-year team captain. On the football team he played Tackle. He broke into the starting lineup early in his freshman year. He was a member of the 1968 Black College Football National Championship Football Team.

     Washington, D.C. has a higher percentage of Black residents than any state in the country, and they have no voting representation in Congress. This is systemic racism in action. It is long past time to give Washington’s 712,000 residents the representation they deserve by making D.C. our 51st state. 

     But, sadly, building the mightiest military forces in world history had greater appeal to the governments of the United States, China, and Russia.  Perhaps, someday, people will ask whether increasing preparations for war by these nations—mostly designed to destroy one another—was the best these governments could do as their populations sank into widespread disease, death, and poverty.
