This past weekend, I was given the opportunity to go to a Formula 1 (F1) racing event. F1 racing is where competitors all over the world come together, and compete to determine who has the fastest car. I was able to go to the Hard Rock Stadium with my family, and watch the racing from a large screen. The F1 racing organization is planning on building a new track in Miami Gardens around the Hard Rock Stadium which will be called, ‘Miami Grand Prix’. Although some people agree with this idea, others oppose it. Below I have written a few of the pros and cons of adding the new racing track in Miami.
Pros: •The reason the race viewing was at the Hard Rock Stadium was so people of color in Miami could be introduced to racing. According to The New York Times, Lewis Hamilton is the only Black racer throughout F1 racing. In order to increase the diversity in racing, F1 is planning on creating a brand new track in Miami. By building the track in Miami Gardens, it will expose Blacks to racing. In Miami Gardens, 68.6% of the population is Black, and with this many Black people they will have easy access to a track, which can expose them to racing. One way F1 is doing this is by offering paid internships for high school and college students.
- In addition to this, F1 racing will donate five million dollars over a 10 year period to the community of Miami Gardens. This will help to fund programs for youth and expose racing to the citizens of Miami Gardens .
- F1 will also promote and support local business and vendors at racing events. This will promote small businesses and help them to grow.
Cons
- Since the new track will be added, more pollution will also occur with. This is because the racing cars will be practicing very often, which will add significantly to the global warming and pollution in the area.
- Along with this, the area will become much more noisy. Since the race will be in Miami, all of their fans will follow, which will increase the noise in the area. Residents living in Miami Gardens are not looking forward to this.
- There will also be an increase of traffic, and current residents may need to find new roads to use. Since the track is being built, it will take up some of the current roads, and users of this road are not pleased with this.
- The five million dollars over a 10 year period means the 113,000 residents will get $4.42 per person.
In conclusion, there are both benefits and negative effects to adding a track in our community.
