Rudolph Moise jumps into CD 24 Primary even though Frederica Wilson hasn’t announced retirement

The South Florida Democrat just left a crowded field in another district.

A day after withdrawing from a crowded primary in one congressional race, Dr. Rudolph Moise has entered another.

The Miami Democrat announced he is running in Florida’s 24th Congressional District under a new map approved by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“Public service is not about protecting political comfort zones; it is about showing up where your voice, experience, and advocacy are most needed,” Moise said.

“After careful reflection and conversations with residents, community leaders, and supporters throughout Miami-Dade and Broward, I have decided to run for Congress in Florida’s 24th District. This campaign is not about rejecting the past. It is about building on the strong foundation and legacy of leadership this district deserves while bringing the urgency, energy, and fight this moment demands.”

Notably, U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson, a Miami-Dade Democrat, has not yet announced if she will run for re-election there. But speculation in recent weeks has rapidly grown about whether the 83-year-old will seek a 10th term in Congress.

“I have deep respect for those who have served this district and helped shape its voice in Congress. That includes Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, whom I have supported in the past and whose years of service to this community deserve recognition,” Moise said.

“It requires action, presence, urgency, and the willingness to fight every single day for the people we represent. That is why I am running for Congress in Florida’s 24th District: to honor the district’s history while bringing the focus, discipline, and energy needed to move our communities forward.”

State Sen. Shevrin Jones has already said he will run if Wilson retires and just suspended his own campaign for re-election to the Florida Legislature.

As for Moise, he just ended a campaign in Florida’s 20th Congressional District, where he was one of several candidates looking to replace recently resigned U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick. There has been growing angst about a large pool of Black candidates splitting the vote in a plurality Black seat since the entry of U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a White Democrat, into that contest.

As he shifts races to another Black access seat, Moise said he will bring a focus on affordability issues with him to the race.

“My focus remains on the issues that matter most to working families, affordability, healthcare, housing, jobs, veterans, small businesses, and making sure communities that have been overlooked have a strong voice,” he said.

“The growing affordability crisis, rising political division, and attacks on working families require new leadership and new tactics. Democracy was never meant to depend on one person. More than 360 million Americans depend on 435 members of Congress to show up, vote, fight, and help shape the future of this country. When that responsibility is ignored, delayed, or treated without urgency, the voices of the people are muted.”

CD 24 under new lines — which a Judge this week said could be used in the 2026 Midterms — still includes areas of Miramar and Miami Gardens but stretches north to Hollywood and Pembroke Pines, while shedding coastal areas in Aventura and Miami Beach.

A Democratic Primary will likely determine who represents the seat next year. More than 68.7% of voters there in 2024 supported Democrat Kamala Harris for President even as Republican Donald Trump won statewide.
