LAUDERHILL, FL — The The City of Lauderhill announced today that Police Officer Brian Sguros has resigned from the Lauderhill Police Department in lieu of termination, effective immediately, following an Internal Affairs investigation into allegations involving residential property within the City.

On May 27, 2026, the Lauderhill Police Department received a complaint concerning Officer Sguros’s conduct related to residential property in Lauderhill. Chief of Police Constance Stanley ordered an Internal Affairs investigation that same day. The Department’s Professional Standards Unit worked in coordination with the Broward County Property Appraiser’s Office, Crimes Against Property Unit, to assist with the criminal investigation.

In July 2026, as the criminal investigation proceeded, Officer Sguros was placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with City protocol for employees under criminal investigation.

On October 20, 2026, Officer Sguros was arrested and charged with the following offenses:

    Official Misconduct (F.S. 838.022)

Criminal Use of a Deceased Person’s Personal Identification Information (F.S. 817.568(8))

Criminal Use of Personal Identification Information (F.S. 817.568(2)(b))

Offense Against Users of Computers (F.S. 815.06(2)(b))

    Unlawful Use of a Two-Way Communications Device (F.S. 934.215)

Following his arrest, Officer Sguros’s administrative leave was immediately converted to leave without pay. After the Internal Affairs investigation, the City initiated termination proceedings in accordance with Section 112.532, Florida Statutes, and applicable City procedures. Officer Sguros resigned before the City took final action on his termination.

“The trust of our residents is the foundation of everything we do,” said Chief Constance Stanley. “When residents call us, they are inviting us into their homes and their lives at their most vulnerable moments, and they must be able to trust that every officer who answers that call is there solely to serve them. Conduct that betrays that trust will not be tolerated in this Department. We acted swiftly and thoroughly, and we will continue to hold every member of this Department to the highest standards of integrity.”

“The public’s trust in our Police Department is imperative to the City of Lauderhill,” said City Manager Kennie Hobbs, Jr. “Our residents deserve a police department they can call on with complete confidence. The City acted decisively once these allegations came to light, and we will not hesitate to do so again whenever the integrity of our workforce is in question.”

As required by Florida law, the Lauderhill Police Department will report Officer Sguros’s separation and the circumstances surrounding it to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, which oversees law enforcement officer certification in Florida.

The Department is cooperating fully with the agencies handling the pending criminal case. Additionally, the Department is urging residents to sign up for the Broward County Property Appraiser’s free Owner Alert service at web.bcpa.net/owneralert, which notifies owners by email when a document is recorded against their property.

The criminal charges against Mr. Sguros remain pending. As the criminal case is ongoing, the City will not comment further on the details of the charges.
