Miami Gardens $60 million general obligation bond
Ballots go out April 1, must be returned April 21
MIAMI GARDENS, FL – The City of Miami Gardens will send out ballots on April 1, 2014 for the $60 million obligation bond – residents must return ballots by April 21, 2014.
The City of Miami Gardens is asking residents to invest in their community by approving the issuance of a $60 million general obligation bond to revamp the City’s parks and re-creational facilities and equip the City with cutting-edge public safety technology. The City is proposing large-scale renovations to existing parks and facilities that will engage the City’s youth and adults alike. The estimated monthly cost per average household will be $3.85.
“The children of Miami Gardens will not be confined to traditional football and basketball sports offerings common in urban areas. We plan to develop a facility that encourages the exploration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as facilities that will expose our youth to non-traditional sports like gymnastics, dance, ballet, fencing, martial arts and boxing. We will also offer opportunities for youth to grow in the areas of audio and video production and support their efforts to hone their culinary skills,” said Mayor Oliver Gilbert III.
The City plans to add the following programs and facilities:
· STEM Laboratory: a science, technology, engineering and math lab where students can explore these technical fields
· Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center: a culinary arts center where residents can sharpen their culinary skills. There will also be an area designated for outdoor dining and hospitality services.
· Audio-Visual and Arts Center: a recording and video studio where residents can hone their talents in front of the microphone, or camera, and behind it
· Elderly Center: an area dedicated to the services and recreational activities enjoyed by the City’s seniors
· Alternative Sports and Fitness Complex: a facility that will house boxing, ballet, martial arts and other non-traditional sports
The City will also utilize a portion of these funds to install crime prevention surveillance cameras and license plate readers at strategic locations throughout the City. This general obligation bond represents a comprehensive effort to improve the quality of life for the residents of Miami Gardens by creating a safer City.
