Grandmother and granddaughter duo graduate together from FAMU
Williams is the grandmother who was able to share her big day with her granddaughter, Chelsea Washington.

May 2 was the day that more than 1,200 Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University students were about to walk across a stage and into the next phase of their lives. They received inspiring words of wisdom from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and many other alums of the very popular university.
Among the brave graduates who were all excited to pursue their dreams there was a very special graduate that I am sure we can all appreciate, 62-year-old Cathy Williams. Williams is the grandmother who was able to share her big day with her granddaughter, Chelsea Washington. After serving many years as an employee of the state, Williams felt that it was time to pursue her goal of get-ting a college degree. She did that.
She courageously looked beyond what others would notice first, her age, and got out of life what she’d desired most.
She took the first step by enrolling into Tallahassee Com-munity College, even while she worked full time. After earning her Associates she then went on to fulfill her second goal of receiving her Bachelor’s degree from FAMU.
Williams received her degree in political science with a minor in criminal justice.
“There is no age limit on pursuing a degree and pursuing your dreams,” said Williams, whose next goal is to obtain a master’s degree in public or business administration.
According to Washington, graduating with her grandmother is a moment that she will never forget. She got the opportunity to walk the stage with one of her greatest inspirations.
“She motivates me by her drive for success,” said Washington, who will receive a bachelor’s degree in biology.
Washington explained that she was so inspired by her grandmother’s passion that she is planning to continue her education at Howard University’s College of Medicine. She wants to become a pediatrician.
“I want to come back home to Tallahassee and open a pediatric facility that will provide services for the underprivileged and do research on autism,” said Washington, one of the three grandchildren that had the pleasure of attending FAMU with their grandmother.
