Black Affairs Advisory Board’s 2012 Pillars Awards October 20

MIAMI, FL — The Miami-Dade County Black Affairs Advisory Board’s Heritage Planning Committee will for the 12th year, recognize several community leaders at their annual “Pillars Awards” ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012 starting at 11:30 a.m. in the Adrienne Arsht’s Knight Concert/Peacock Education Center, 1300 Biscayne Blvd.
The recognition and scholarships to several “Young Pillars” will be given during a brunch/reception which also features a silent auction. Tickets are $40.00 per person which includes the brunch and entertainment.
This year’s Community Pillars are: Dr. Erhabor Ighodaro (Executive Director-Dr. Robert B. Ingram Foundation); Ms. Isis Roberts; (Musical Director for the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center) Al West (CFO and Sr. Vice President Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau); Mr. Leroy Jones (Executive Director-Neighbors and Neighbors Association, Inc.) Mr. Ronald Fulton (Community Activist); Dr. Ted Greer (Senior Pastor-Ebenezer Community Church); Mrs. Awa Lodmell (CEO/President AWA Skincare, Inc.); Rev. Carl Johnson (Senior Pastor-93rd Street Baptist Church), and Valerie Riles (Vice President of Government and Board Relations at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts).
“The honorees were selected for their support of projects or programs which positively impact the community along with their commitment to public service. Most of them have labored for decades without much public recognition, but their contributions to the South Florida landscape are both noteworthy and important,” said Edgar Wright, chair of the Black Heritage Planning Committee and the appointee of Commissioner Barbara J. Jordan (District 1).
The BHPC is also awarding scholarships to “Young Pillars” or students who are enrolled in a post-secondary institution and involved in various civic oriented activities. “We are determined to provide recognition to our Community Pillars and scholarships to support our ‘Future Pillars,’ he continued.
The Black Heritage Planning Committee is a subcommittee of the Black Affairs Advisory Board. It is comprised of volunteer Miami-Dade County employees who plan and implement activities throughout the year aimed at increasing visibility and recognition for the contributions of members and descendants of the African Diaspora.
The annual Pillars Awards recognizes people from the com-munity who often work behind the scenes, often without intentionally seeking recognition. Young Pillars are selected based on their academic goals and community service.
