TALLAHASSEE, FL — Following the announcement of a guilty verdict of manslaughter in the trial of the killer of Markeis McGlockton, Andrew Gillum made the following statement:

“This small measure of justice wouldn’t have happened without a fight. Thank you to attorneys Ben Crump and Michele Rayner for your fearless advocacy and thank you to the entire community who stood up, protested, and sat in for Markeis McGlockton and his family. You humble and inspire me. I hope this verdict brings his family and loved ones some amount of closure as they continue the difficult journey of healing — and know that all of Florida is with you in that journey.

“The wheels of justice turn too slowly, but I am glad that in this case they moved in the right direction. This is a victory. Now, we must rededicate ourselves to overturning the Stand Your Ground law that put Markeis McGlockton’s life, and so many others, in danger.”
