Described as unassuming and extremely impactful, Florida A&M University (FAMU) Alumnus and Converse President G. Scott Uzzell will deliver the keynote address during Friday’s Homecoming Convocation at 10:10 a.m. in Tallahassee.
The event will be held at the Alfred Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center.
As president and CEO of Converse, Inc., Uzzell leads all aspects of the business, globally. He has recently overseen the company’s successful return to the basketball category across product, marketplace and sponsorships, after a 10-year hiatus from the sport. On Friday, he will elaborate on FAMU’s impact on his career and life. His wife is also a FAMU alumnus.
The dedicated Rattler has paid it forward to his alma mater with charitable contributions and as a member of the FAMU Foundation Board.
Uzzell received his bachelor’s degree in business from FAMU and his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Prior to accepting his position at Converse, Uzzell served as president of the Venturing & Emerging Brands (VEB) Group of the Coca-Cola Company.
To gain insight into his success, the Office of Communications asked Uzzell to respond to a few questions, and the globetrotting CEO delivered.
How did you ascend to the presidency of Converse?
Chasing things, I am passionate about. Always pushing myself beyond comfort – whether skiing, or 175-mile bikes races or seeking new career opportunities, always looking to grow…being prepared to fail which is OK and a part of life. Not being afraid of failure.
What would you say to FAMU students who aspire to sit in the big chair of a major corporation?
Set high goals for yourself, dream big and go after life. Profession = Passion: Seek to intersect your profession with your passion you will never work a day in your life.

What’s the key to being successful in your present role?
– Developing a big vision for growth through serving consumer needs.
– Crafting a strategy that realizes the vision.
– Hiring and building a winning team.
– Having fun and celebrating success along the journey.
– Living a health/wellness lifestyle – big careers are demanding; your body is your temple.
What are some of the lessons you’ve learned from doing “the work”?
– Having a great career or life is not easy. It must be planned and worked for.
– Leadership is lonely – find good mentors and seek feedback.
– Sometimes you do all the right things and still things don’t go your way; learn from your mistakes.
