FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — The AKAdemic Foundation in partnership with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA), Zeta Rho Omega Chapter recently held its Annual Scholarship Sip, at the Jim Ward Community Center. Guest speaker, Dr. Avis Proctor, president, Broward College North Campus, provided an inspirational message.
E. Pearl Maloney, AKAdemic Foundation president and JoeAnn Fletcher, Zeta Rho Omega’s president, presented scholarships to deserving high school students. The 2015 AKAdemic Foundation Scholarship recipients included: Asya Mills and Charles Maloney (Dillard High School); Jada Gadson (Flanagan High School); Melvin Drayton, Jr. (The Off Campus Learning Center); Carla Comrie, Shang Jordan, and Michaela Ware (Fort Lauderdale High School); Abani Rollins (Hallandale High School), Louizaire Ludwidg and Zahrea Scott (Northeast High School); Teirra German (Nova High School); Ruth Mannie (Piper High School); IIiana JeanLouis and Simone Powell (Stranahan High School).
Addtionally, AKA, Zeta Rho Omega Chapter established a scholarship in the name of one of its charter members, Betty Carter Smith in the amount of $1,000 and the 2015 recipient is Miatz Saint Fleur (Boyd Anderson High School).
Other 2015 scholarships presented were: Mae Jenkins Fine Arts Scholarship recipient, Tatyana Johnson (Dillard High School); Willard Lamar Scholarship recipient, Leandra Davis (Plantation High School). Dr. Dierdre Satterwhite Wilson and Darlene Satterwhite Hargrove presented the Vivian Satterwhite Memorial Scholarship to Shang Jordan (Fort Lauderdale High School), to pursue a career in Nursing.
AKA is the oldest Greek letter organization established in America by Black college women, which was founded in 1908 at Howard University. The AKAdemic Foundation and Zeta Rho Omega wishes to thank the Broward community for its continuous support of our programs, thus helping us to provide “Service to All Mankind”.
