Athletics Record 161 Student-Athletes Named to Athletic Director’s Honor Roll

A record number of student-athletes received the school-based honor

MIAMI GARDENS, FL – Upon the start of his tenure as Florida Memorial University’s Director of Athletics, Jason Horn set out to create a culture that called for student-athletes to “win, grow, and graduate” – and the Lions answered that charge by setting a new program record for most student-athletes named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll as 161 student-athletes received the honor.

Nearly 100 of the 160 students who earned the honor by attaining at least a 3.0 grade-point average during the previous semester were treated to a catered lunch, received a t-shirt, and received congratulatory messages from Horn, FMU president Dr. Jaffus Hardrick, and vice provost/faculty athletics representative Dr. Adrienne Cooper before gathering on the FMU Wellness Center floor for a commemorative photo.

FMU’s football program, which completed its first full season on the field this past November, had the highest number of honorees among all the varsity sports with 20 honorees – breaking the previous high (19) set by baseball back in 2020.

The baseball program matched its high with 19 honorees again this year.

First-year varsity program softball had a strong showing with 16 student-athletes receiving honor while second-year flag football had 13 make the honor roll – both impressive numbers for first-year head softball coach Pedro Herrera and flag football head coach Jonathan Alvarez respectively.

Also, softball slightly edged volleyball (beach & indoor) for the highest total among the women’s athletic programs. Volleyball had 15 honorees, women’s basketball had 10, while women’s soccer and competitive both had eight.

The Lions’ men’s basketball program, which won the 2022 Sun Conference Tournament Championship, had 10 make the list while the men’s basketball developmental team – which also won the conference’s developmental basketball tournament – had 13 students receive the honor.
