J. Murray Gibson, Ph.D., dean of the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the organization announced this week. 

   The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Concert Choir holds its final performance of the year with its Holiday Concert on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m.

     Established in 2004, Art, Beats and Lyrics (AB+L) has grown from an annual Atlanta art and music showcase into a traveling exhibition. Celebrating 15 years, AB+L made its way back to a southern hip-hop hub, Miami, during its nation-wide tour – bringing fusions of urban art and music to create a one-of-a-kind cultural experience to everyone from the seasoned art collector to the social media enthusiast.  

The addition of original artwork will create a visual experience that aligns with the museum’s content and blends well with the overall aesthetic of the accompanying galleries. Submitted artwork will be juried by an internal art selection committee with three selected artists being awarded between $50,000 – $70,000 for the creation and installation of their work.

On Monday, December 9, at 5 p.m., Dr. Christine Darden, Congressional Gold Medal recipient and former NASA mathematician, data analyst and aeronautical engineer, ‘Hidden Figures’ author Margot Lee Shetterly, U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), and U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-Texas) will headline a reception, hosted by the Sloan Foundation, in recognition of the women mathematicians and engineers who contributed to the success of NASA and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics during the Space Race.

     We stress the concept that these proposed legislative acts would, in fact, be antithetical to healthy, robust and productive relationships between law enforcement and those they are sworn to protect as these new laws would presumably provide law enforcement officers with the authority, indeed the responsibility, to stop, interrogate and arrest persons on suspicion of selling or being in possession of untaxed cigarettes.

     Marilyn Mosby, the Baltimore City State’s Attorney, reopened the case earlier this year because of lingering questions and recent revelations of corruption in the city’s police department that allegedly stretched back for decades.

     California Sen. Kamala Harris informed staff Tuesday on a conference call that she is dropping out of the presidential race because she lacks the funds to compete, according to staff on the call.

In a recently released video, Williams donned a pair of jeans, workboats, a hardhat and went to work on Salt Marsh Elementary School in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica. Williams, who has won a total of 39 Tennis Grand Slams – including Doubles titles, has also built grade schools in Uganda, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. Williams built the Marsh Elementary through a partnership with the nonprofit Helping Hands Jamaica, while the schools in Africa were in conjunction with Build Africa.

     Civil rights attorney Fred Gray will be honored with the Living Legends Award from the National Black Caucus of State Legislators(NBCSL) for his continued efforts to fight on all fronts for the Civil Rights of Black people.
