At the modern HCBU campuses, most have established courses in Black Studies, but few have departments dedicated to the field. Only Howard and Clark Atlanta universities offer a Master of Arts in Black Studies. Howard is the only HBCU to offer a doctoral program in African Studies; eight traditionally White institutions (including Princeton and Yale) also offer a Ph. D in African Studies.

I believe celebrating our heroes does as much for us as it does them. Most who put in work to improve our communities, using whatever resources they have, don’t do it for flowers, applause, or any other recognition. However, is it too much to ask of ourselves to let them know they are seen and valued?
St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre burned down on March 26. On April 2, the Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas, Louisiana was burned down. Two days after that fire on April 4, the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church was also burned in the same town. Authorities are confident that the fires were all intentionally set.
FGO’s Family Day is a fun-filled event where opera fans – young and old, new to the genre or opera aficionados – can come and explore the world of opera through hands-on activities, interactive experiences, and the thrill of live theater. Activities will include stage make up, costume and prop design, instrument petting zoo, voice lessons, and a live musical performance to delight all ages. All participants receive an opera passport/autograph book to guide them through the day’s activities, as well as a special gift to commemorate the day.
FANM Celebrates Lawsuit Victory
Emmanuel Blake Dawson, Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) “Million Dollar Scholar,” continues to break new ground. At the recent Alpha Phi Alpha Southern Regional Convention in Jackson, Miss., as a write-in candidate, the third-year student was elected as the Assistant Southern Regional Vice President. It’s the highest student position in the region. Dawson, a member of the Beta Nu Chapter at FAMU, won in a run-off election.
Florida A&M University’s team won “Moguls in the Making,” a ‘Shark Tank’-like competition sponsored by entertainer and rapper Big Sean, Ally Financial and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to prepare the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County recently chose two stand-out mentors – Big Brother Steven Samuels and Big Sister Quanese Alexander – as the 2019 Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year. Chosen from more than 1,000 mentors who participate in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County program, Samuels and Alexander epitomize what it means to be a “Big” mentor.
