City of Lauderhill Commissioner Lawrence “Jabbow” Martin has held Breast Cancer Awareness Month events for the last two years and is planning more for this October 2023. Besides turning City Hall pink with a giant PINK twinkling light ribbon, this Commissioner organizes and leads a Community Bike Ride through the City of Lauderhill – dressed in PINK head to toe! This annual PINK UP Bike Ride and Community Health Fair brings awareness to everyone. It reminds us all that prevention and early detection is key to beating breast cancer. In addition, the funds raised go to cancer research organizations and residents who are battling the dreadful disease.

On Friday April 28th, 2023, Parkridge Elementary, under the leadership of Principal Samantha Whitehead and Assistant Principal Tiffany Monroe in conjunction with Hands on Broward, held its second annual “Real Men Read event. Representatives from various segments of Broward including Law Enforcement, Ministry, Business, Education, and the Fraternal Community joined ranks to demonstrate to the phenomenal Parkridge students the joy and importance of reading.

     This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation’s (LADF) 10 years Reimagined Anniversary. To celebrate the milestone, LADF honored 10 Dodgers Foundation JRF scholars at Dodgers Stadium during Jackie Robinson Day.

Last week I alerted you to a subject that I believe may prove controversial, impractical, or implausible but one that I hoped would at least generate some serious contemplation and consideration. In today’s political climate and division, I believe that our high school and college athletes no longer have the luxury of straddling the fence when faced with the choice of selecting a college to attend and compete athletically.

Former Congresswoman Carrie Meek, who became the first Black member of Congress from Florida since the Reconstruction era and former Miami City Athalie Range, the first Black City of Miami commissioner and one of the pioneers that helped secured Virginia Key Beach as the only Colored Beach in Miami, were among the latest inductees of the 2023 Miami-Dade County Women’s Hall of Fame.
